Witnessing the incredible work, the dedication, the resourcefulness and the ethics of the people working on the ground in Israel is a humbling experience. Even the trip’s guide who has been accompanying trips and missions for many years was amazed by what we witnessed. Yet these not-for-profit organizations operate under the pressures and constrains of small budgets and they struggle for daily survival. They need us to notice, appreciate their hard work and assist them, so they can continue their vital missions. In a world where liberal Jews look for new ways and venues to engage in social activism, participating in grassroots efforts to create a Just Society in Israel is a great effort to be part of and a Jewish thing to do. Being part of this however means more than just helping Israeli NGOs help others. Those NGOs themselves are crucial because they are the keepers of the true values and soul of the Jewish state, of what Israel attempted to be in the past and what she can still become in the future.

MK Ophir Pines-Paz recently made headlines in Israel by resigning from the Israeli cabinet to protest the appointment of Avigdor Lieberman of the Yisrael Beiteinu party to the post of Minister of Strategic Threats. MK Pines-Paz has previously served as Minister of the Interior, as Labor Knesset faction Chair, and is one of the most popular and widely respected Labor party leaders. In resigning, he also announced his candidacy for the Labor party leadership. MK Pines-Paz was the only Labor Minister to resign on this issue, taking a principled stand against the positions espoused by Lieberman and his party.

Northern Israel is under attack. Katyusha missiles are falling on Nahariya, Safed, and even Haifa. This is placing all inhabitants, but particularly the children, in an extremely stressful situation. Our colleagues and friends in Israel have shared stories of frightened children in development towns and absorption centers stuck in bomb shelters for hours on end with little to do.

Others returned to a radically different Israel after absences of 20 years or more. To be sure, most had never had access to what Ameinu had in store for them.

We are planning to use the excess funds raised by Ameinu to build another alternative energy system to help a second Bedouin child with juvenile diabetes in a similar circumstance. We'll keep you updated about our efforts to catalyze discussion regarding access to electricity for all of Israel's citizens.

full social and political equality of all its citizens, without distinction of race, creed or sex; and will
guarantee full freedom of conscience, worship, education and culture."
