By Avram Lyon On November 13, 2008, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) supervised an election at Alle Processing to determine if workers wished to be represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 342. Alle produces kosher products under the Meal Mart, Mon Cuisine, and Mrs. Schreiber labels. The union lost the vote. The Economics of Oppression

By Avram Lyon Advertisments have appeared recently in a Guatemalan newspaper for men to work at a meat packing plant in Postville, IA. The only meat packing plant in Postville, is the Agriprocessor plant, the object of a raid by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on May 12. This is not the first time Guatemalan workers have been recruited to work in Postville, and when a worker comes to Iowa he does so at considerable cost.
