Ameinu to US Jewish Groups: Don’t Serve Food from Agriprocessors

Ameinu wishes to express its deepest concern regarding recent first hand accounts of mistreatment of workers and animals at the Agriprocessors kosher meat facility in Postville, Iowa.  Agriprocessors claims to provide sixty percent of the beef and forty percent of the chicken to the US kosher market.  Last month, federal agents arrested nearly 400 Agriprocessors’ employees – about two thirds of all employees at the plant, charging them with immigration violations and identity theft, among other infractions.

“Unfortunately, this is only the latest of a long list of reports of economic oppression of illegal and undocumented workers leveled against Agriprocessors,” said Kenneth Bob, President of Ameinu. “Allegations of cruelty to animals and unsafe working conditions at the Agriprocessors plant have also been voiced for several years,” Bob added.

Ameinu calls on our members to join the boycott of Rubashkin products until safe and legal working conditions are restored in the Agriprocessors plant.  Likewise, Ameinu calls on all Jewish organizations to avoid serving Agriprocessors products at their kosher functions. Ameinu encourages such organizations to use alternative kosher food sources.

“The widely reported mistreatment of workers is extremely troubling,” Bob, continued. “It’s unfathomable that a company devoted to selling glatt kosher meat can be so inhumane to the people working for it.  The entire Jewish community should stand up and say, ‘enough.’  Mistreatment of employees goes against our heritage, our religion and our conscience,” Bob added.

Agriprocessors’ glatt kosher brands include:

·        Aaron’s Best

·        Aaron’s Choice

·        Rubashkin’s

·        European Glatt

·        Shor Habor

·        Supreme Kosher

·        David’s

Consumers should be aware that Agriprocessor’s USDA plant number is Est. 4653A. That number will identify products coming from this plant no matter what “brand name” the owners of the plant use for their product.
