New York (March 30) — “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to build a new West Bank settlement, approved today by the Security Cabinet, makes clear that he prioritizes placating the settler movement over Israel’s need to seek a two-state solution to the conflict with the Palestinians, which is essential if it is to remain a Jewish and democratic state,” declared Kenneth Bob, President of Ameinu. “Fulfilling his pledge to the settlers of the illegal Amona outpost, evacuated in February after years of defiance of the Israeli High Court, is a slap in the face to the approximately 60 police officers injured carrying out the court’s order, which concluded that Amona was built on private Palestinian lands.”
Ameinu is North America’s largest grassroots progressive Zionist organization and is today’s Labor Zionist movement, which has worked to strengthen Zionism and build the State of Israel for more than 100 years.
“Ameinu opposes all actions that weaken Zionism and the State of Israel, even when they come from the Israeli government,” said Ameinu CEO Gideon Aronoff. “Building a completely new settlement in a remote area of the West Bank has no security rationale. Instead, it further destabilizes Israel since construction will be on territory that will never be included as part of Israel in any viable two state agreement with the Palestinians. It is simply a repudiation of all in Israel and the international community who are seeking a peaceful, just and secure future for Israelis and Palestinians.”
“Creating the first new settlement in 20 years, along with other moves to expand growth in the settlements, signals that this Israeli government is working in lockstep the with the messianic settlement movement against the interests of the vast majority of the citizens of Israel and the core values of Zionism,” Bob concluded.
